An early morning blaze outside the Gold Room threatened the popular northeast Atlanta nightclub Friday.

Fortunately, fire crews were able to snuff out the flames before they spread inside, officials said at the scene. Firefighters were called to the club along Piedmont Road about 5:20 a.m., Atlanta fire Capt. Delante Quarterman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They arrived to find a large fire outside the building and worked to contain it, he said.

“The crews kept it from spreading to the interior of the structure,” Quarterman said, adding that the call came in as a two-alarm fire. It appears the building suffered relatively minor smoke damage from the adjacent blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
