A former UGA fullback turned youth league football coach was accused of threatening to beat up the referee during a weekend game, but no criminal charges have been filed in the case, Alpharetta police said.
Verron Haynes, of Woodstock, became irate and ran onto the field after his son was ejected for a penalty during a Saturday afternoon game at North Park, according to a police incident report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The head referee called police after the incident, but Haynes left the park before an officer arrived, the report states.
“Haynes ran onto the field screaming and yelling at him and when he got close started yelling that he was going to kick his (expletive),” the police report states.
Haynes, whose son plays in the Roswell youth league, was restrained by other coaches and referees and left the field, according to police. Haynes will not be allowed to attend his son's remaining games or to coach this season, Julie Brechbill, a spokeswoman for Roswell, told Channel 2 Action News.
While at UGA, Haynes is remembered for his 2001 touchdown catch against Tennessee and the “hobnail boot” call made by the late Larry Munson. He played five seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and five games for the Falcons in the 2009 season.
Haynes has not returned calls to Channel 2 regarding the youth football game incident.
