A New Mexico woman battling stage four breast cancer says she wasn't allowed to visit her daughter at school — because of the way she smells.
Kerri Mascareno is currently taking chemotherapy pills to help shrink the tumor in her breast so she can have it surgerically removed. (Via KGTV)
Strong and unpleasant body odors can be just one of the side effects of breast cancer and chemotherapy, and Mascareno will be the first to admit it can be overpowering sometimes. (Via KWTV)
But she never thought it would stop her from being able to visit her own daughter at school.
During a meeting, Mascareno says Principal Robert Abney told her she wasn't allowed to enter Tierra Antigua Elementary anymore because of her odor. (Via WXII)
"He just said he knows this is gonna hurt my feelings, and he understands where I'm coming from because his mother had breast cancer and she had the same exact smell." (Via WREX)
"He just said that he would have to ask me to sit in my car because he could smell me through the window." (Via KOB-TV)
And Mascareno says her ban even extended to a school-wide Thanksgiving lunch. She says she was told the only way she could attend was if she and her daughter sat in his office instead of with the whole group.
No official words from the school, but when reporters found Principal Abney and asked for a comment, this was all they got out of him.
"Do you want to say sorry for saying anything? Nope. You need to talk to Monica or Rigo." (Via WWBT)
Mascareno was devastated because she knows this could very well be her last Thanksgiving. But fortunately, the school later changed its tune and invited her to enjoy the Thanksgiving lunch with the rest of the school. Because of everything that's happened, she's not sure if she'll attend.
