Money isn’t everything in politics, but it surely helps.

Monday, candidates seeking to replace a term-limited Gov. Nathan Deal filed financial reports revealing how much cash they’ve raised for the November 2018 election.

Republican Lt. Gov. Casey leads the pack by raking in about $2.7 million. His three GOP rivals all surpassed the $1 million mark, though one did so with a hefty loan.

On the Democratic side, two state legislators — former House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and state Rep. Stacey Evans — each raised about $500,000.

The race could wind up being the most expensive gubernatorial contest in Georgia history.

A quick inspection of campaign filings in the race for mayor of Atlanta shows the financial dominance of Council President Ceasar Mitchell, former COO Peter Aman, and Councilwoman Mary Norwood.

Mitchell and Aman have raised about $1.7 million each, though half of Aman’s total comes via a personal loan.

Norwood has raised just over $1 million.

The election for Atlanta mayor is this November.

A Cobb County SWAT officer who shot and killed a military veteran holding two bank workers hostage took the life of another standoff suspect just 15 months earlier, a Georgia Bureau of Investigations spokeswoman confirms.

Officer Dennis Ponte faces no criminal charges in the Friday killing of Brian Easley, a 33-year-old ex-Marine, at a Wells Fargo in Marietta.

Records obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution show Ponte also pulled the trigger in an April 2016 standoff at a Marathon gas station in Mableton where 18-year-old Demetrius Deshon Dorsey held two employees at gunpoint.

Which Atlanta Braves are apt to be traded by the Major League Baseball deadline?

AJC sports columnist Mark Bradley is glad you asked.

The Braves aren’t sold long-term on having Freddie Freeman play third base, so the team is likely fielding offers for first baseman Matt Adams, Bradley says.

The value of southpaw Jaime Garcia has dropped recently, but he’s still a starting pitcher and his contract won’t make any potential suitors balk.

Closer Jim Johnson leads the majors in blown saves, but he too could help a team in the postseason.

Outfielder Nick Markakis may be on the way out. His $10 million per year contracts expires after next season and the Braves may think 19-year-old Ronald Acuna, the No. 10 prospect in all of baseball, is ready to patrol SunTrust Park.
