Police in South Florida are hoping that video of a man they said spearheaded the theft of more than $250,000 worth of heirlooms and jewelry will lead them to the suspect, WPLG reported.
Thursday, Hollywood police released video and a photo of a man wearing a hoodie and a Houston Astros championship baseball cap, who helped crack a safe containing rings, earrings, medallions, and unique items designed by the homeowner's mother, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
“No one will appreciate these pieces as much as us,” the homeowner, who asked not to be identified, told the newspaper. “My mother (now 88) designed a lot of it in the ’60s. She put in the thought and the time to make these beautiful pieces that are one of a kind.”
A wedding ring belonging to the homeowner's great-grandmother and a South African Krugerrand coin were among the items taken, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
A reward of up to $8,400 is being offered for a tip that leads to an arrest, the Hollywood Police Department said.
The suspect was caught on the home's doorbell camera just before 7 p.m. Dec. 15, the Miami Herald reported.
“Once the suspects determined no one was home, they broke in and emptied out the family safe, taking more than $250,000 worth of jewelry,” Hollywood police said in a news release.
"The suspect spent about 30 minutes inside of the home before fleeing in a waiting vehicle outside," Miranda Grossman, spokeswoman for Hollywood police, told the Sun-Sentinel.
The burglars did not have a combination to the safe, the homeowner told the newspaper.
"These are family pieces," the homeowner told the Sun-Sentinel. "It just has so much value to me and my family."
