From captivity to free agent: Brittney Griner signs with the Atlanta Dream
WNBA superstar Brittney Griner joins the Atlanta Dream, bringing her championship dunks to the Southern city. She also brings her work with the campaign "Bring Our Families Home," which advocates for the release of detained Americans abroad. Griner has personal knowledge of this issue, spending nearly 10 months detained in Russia. Sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison, the U.S. classified Griner as wrongfully detained and she was freed in a prisoner exchange in 2022. Since her return, the 10-time All-Star has supported “Bring Our Families Home,” and that work won't end here in Atlanta: "That's not going away at all," Griner said. "... There are still too many Americans that are overseas right now, not with their families, in heinous conditions."
