Family members and friends gathered Sunday at a vigil to remember Karlea Thomas, a 31-year-old described as an outgoing and artistic mother.
She was found dead with neck injuries in the bathroom of her apartment early Friday morning by her 11-year-old daughter, Channel 2 Action News reported.
“She saw her mom dead, on the floor, beaten and strangled,” Thomas’ mother, Joya Poole, told Channel 2, “and (there’s) something else she needs to see: her mom have a proper burial.”
An autopsy will be performed to determine Thomas’ official cause of death. Family told the news station that Thomas had been in an abusive relationship.
Police do not have any leads but have interviewed an unidentified person of interest, Channel 2 reported.
“We’re going to try and get through it the best way we can,” Poole said. “I’m just glad we got a lot of support.”
