A school bus driver’s failure to yield led to a car slamming into the back of the bus carrying Cobb County elementary school children, according to an incident report.

Shirley Jean Anderson, 65, of Marietta, was cited for failure to yield when entering or crossing a roadway after Tuesday's accident that sent the other driver, Joe Russell Jones, to the hospital.

A driver was injured in a school bus crash Tuesday on Austell Road in Cobb County.

According to the report, Anderson stopped on McDuffie Road waiting for traffic to clear before turning left. She was taking seven children and an adult back to Sanders Elementary School in Austell, Cobb schools spokeswoman Donna Lowry said.

Anderson thought it was clear and began turning into the middle of the road. But the bus was struck by Jones, who told police Anderson had stopped in the middle of the road and was in his lane.

Jones was extricated from his car and taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with complaints of neck, back, shoulder and rib pain, according to the report.

The passengers on the bus were not injured.
