A fatal wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a minivan shut down most northbound lanes of I-85 in Gwinnett County during Thursday's morning commute.
The wreck happened at 7:05 a.m. on I-85 northbound before Steve Reynolds Boulevard, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter.
Gwinnett police Sgt. Christopher Hyde told The Atlanta Journal Constitution that a minivan getting onto the interstate at Beaver Ruin Road "started cutting across the lanes and the minivan clipped the front of the tractor-trailer, which made both of the vehicles lose control, travel off the road and subsequently, the trailer became disconnected from the tractor and rolled over."
Hyde said there was a man and woman in the tractor-trailer. The man was killed and the woman was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious injuries, Hyde said.
"We are still trying to figure out who was driving," he said.
The woman driving the minivan was also taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with less serious injuries, according to Hyde.
He said the minivan driver was apparently at fault.
"From witnesses and evidence we see on the road, it all points to the unsafe lane change by the minivan," Hyde said.
The names of those killed and injured were not immediately available. Hyde said the refrigerated trailer was hauling food.
At least eight fire vehicles responded to the scene. Most northbound lanes were shut down the remainder of the morning commute, but all lanes were reopened just before 11 a.m.
