Man found dead on Gwinnett road

A shooting in Tucker early Sunday left a man dead, his body lying next to a taxi.

The identity of the man had not been released as of early Sunday afternoon, pending the notification of his next of kin, according to a spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police.

Sometime before dawn, police were sent to respond to a report of shots being fired in the area around 1300 Branch Drive, according to Jeffery Richter, a Gwinnett Police spokesman.

When they arrived, officers found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head and called emergency medical technicians to the scene. The EMS technicians who arrived told police that they believed the victim “did not survive his injuries,” said Richter, in a statement.

As of early this afternoon, no information was available regarding any suspect, said the police statement. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”

Alton Woodruff, a neighbor, came downstairs in the early morning to find a heavy policy presence and a body lying a few feet from his truck, with a cab nearby.

“This was about 6 o’clock,” he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He was lying in a pool of blood right behind my truck. I was kind of shocked.”

Woodruff said he has lived in the area for six years, and in that time there have been a couple killings and a number of break-ins, including the time valuable camera equipment was stolen from his truck.

“You hear shots out here a lot, but sometimes it is just holiday time and people shooting just to shoot,” he said. “But everybody’s got a gun out here.”

Other witnesses had told him that the shooting happened after a couple had been involved in “a commotion” with the victim, Woodruff said. “Someone got a little out of control.”
