The driver of a sedan was killed in a crash Sunday after witnesses said the vehicle was being driven erratically on the Downtown Connector, according to Atlanta police.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. in the southbound lanes near University Avenue, police said Monday in a statement. Investigators determined that a black Kia Optima hit a black Chevrolet Suburban before the sedan overturned.

The Kia’s driver, identified as 27-year-old Eboni N. Powell, was pronounced dead at the scene, police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said.

“Witnesses at the scene told investigators that the Kia had been driving erratically prior to the accident,” he said in the statement.

The resulting investigation shut down the southbound lanes of the Downtown Connector for nearly three hours Sunday evening. During the closure, traffic was forced off the interstate onto I-20, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Lanes did not begin to reopen until just before 10 p.m., when the crash was moved to a right shoulder, the Traffic Center reported.

The cause remains under investigation.
