Henry County police and a state traffic task force are teaming up for a weekend to crackdown on dangerous driving in the county that has already had 15 traffic-related deaths this year.
Ten of those deaths were related to drunk driving, speeding or no safety belt, according to Lt. Chuck Simmons, head of special operations for Henry police.
Rolling Thunder, a program from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, will bring officers from multiple jurisdictions Aug. 1-2 to “ reduce mounting highway deaths and serious injuries by introducing a high-visibility law enforcement presence to help stabilize the extreme and illegal driving behaviors of careless motorists who cause those crashes,” Simmons said.
It is not just for show. Task-force officers will conduct safety belt and sobriety road checks and speed patrols while collecting data to document their life-saving progress, Simmons said.
A Henry crackdown in November resulted in 112 arrests and 381 citations. Of the arrests, 62 were for DUI or illicit drugs, 47 were for other criminal, motor and vehicle infractions and two were for outstanding criminal warrants, according to Henry County numbers.
