A routine day of school was disrupted by the sound of gunfire and a woman’s voice warning students and staff Tuesday afternoon: “Intruder alert. Intruder alert. Lockdown.”

Police rushed to Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy. Word came quickly that no one was injured, but many anxious moments still followed. Here’s some of what happened, based on a series of eyewitness but unofficial accounts.

1 p.m. DeKalb police respond to an incident at the school.

1:18 School board chairman Melvin Johnson confirms reports of shots fired and an active shooter in the school.

1:36 Students gather and wait in a field outside the school.

1:40 A parent pickup location is announced, the Wal-Mart off I-20 at Gresham Road.

1:50 Authorities say a suspect is in custody. Officials say shots have been fired. No immediate report of injuries.

1:58 DeKalb police sources confirm they have a suspect in custody. They say the shooter had an AK-47 assault rifle and gave up peacefully.

2 p.m. A crowd of about 100 people are in the Wal-Mart parking lot and there is a steady stream of cars and foot traffic.

5 p.m. Police hold a news conference. No charges have been filed against the suspect

7:55 p.m. The suspect has been identified as Michael Brandon Hill, 20. He faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
