Spencer Young had just turned 60.

The retired Army veteran took care of his wife as he managed his side business.

He was killed after being struck by a car on Monday.

Young died while directing traffic on Powers Road in Marietta as part of a tree trimming service.

For reasons unknown, driver Allen Martin didn’t see Young as he waved for Martin to stop.

Now the family wonders why Martin was allowed to walk away.

The family says the driver admitted to being distracted when he hit their loved one.

Young’s family says they’ve been given the run-around about what happened the night he died.

Stepdaughter Toni Bare said she heard contradictory accounts from police.

In one story Bare read, police said 82-year-old Martin stayed at the scene.

In a different account, she was told he’d fled.

Bare said she was also given mixed information on Martin’s driving focus.

What’s worst, Bare said, Martin hasn’t faced any stringent consequences.

Police told Channel 2 Action News that Martin was issued a citation for misdemeanor vehicular homicide, but that charge could increase should a toxicology report prove Martin was intoxicated.

Bare said Martin hadn’t reached out to the family to apologize.

“The worst thing of all is it’s like his life didn’t mean anything to nobody, but us,” Bare said between tears.

Young's family has set up a GoFundMe page to pay for funeral costs.

Bare hopes to bury her stepfather in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
