Ethics agency to debate ceding control to outside group

Dec 19, 2013

The embattled state ethics commission set a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to cede control of all or parts of the agency’s operations to an outside organization in what experts said would be an unprecedented move.

Commissioner Heath Garrett said the proposal would “keep the agency operating effectively and restore some confidence that has been lost” in the wake of months of upheaval. He said it would likely involve hiring an independent group to oversee key operations of the agency.

Two top employees last week were served with federal subpoenas seeking documents related to a probe of campaign finance allegations against Gov. Nathan Deal. Three other former staffers also received the subpoenas, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
