At a 24-hour breakfast eatery known for its hash browns and waffles, fancy attire is not required.
But two college-age men, including one from metro Atlanta, were arrested over the weekend after refusing to pull their pants up to cover their boxer shorts at a Waffle House in South Carolina, police say.
Donovan Johnson and Andrew Gehring, both 22, were each charged with disorderly conduct when deputies were called to the scene shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office report states.
A security guard at the Waffle House called police because Johnson and Gehring “were causing a disturbance because he had asked them to leave for failing to comply with his request to pull their pants up and not show their boxers,” the report states.
The guard asked the two men be removed from the area, and deputies offered both rides home, according to police. The two men were also advised to have sober friends pick them up, but declined, police said. Deputies also allegedly asked Johnson and Gehring to stop using profanity.
“Mr. Johnson and Mr. Gehring both advised they were out to have fun and implied they were Wofford (College) students graduating this date and it wasn’t their concern that proper decorum was needed in the public domain,” the police report states.
Both Johnson and Gehring were later released after posting bond, jail records show.
Johnson was a 2010 graduate of Union Grove High School in Henry County before signing to play football at Wofford. He rushed for 854 yards and scored four touchdowns in the 2013 season, according to the college’s website.
Gehring, of North Carolina, also played football for Wofford until February 2011, when he was dismissed from the team after being arrested and charged with burglary, according to media reports. Gehring left the college at that time.
