Deputies are investigating whether the death of a 77-year-old Cumming woman was caused by a car collision a week earlier that initially appeared to cause only minor injuries.

Thomas Wright, 19, of Sandy Springs, allegedly did not yield to a flashing yellow light before turning left off eastbound Buford Highway toward the Ga. 400 northbound on-ramp. His 2016 Nissan Altima collided with Sadra Joyce Mettee, who was heading westbound in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Wright was not injured, and his passenger, 76-year-old Betty Wright of Marietta, reported only minor injuries, deputies said.

Mettee was visibly injured, according to deputies, but only complained of minor injuries, and after a medical evaluation at the hospital she was discharged.

More than a week later, Mettee was readmitted to the hospital for internal injuries believed to be caused by the crash, officials said. At that point, the traffic specialist unit reopened the case.

Mettee died the next day.

“We don’t know if it was a heart attack, or something totally unrelated,” Deputy Jenny Belafi told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Regarding charges, Belafi said, “We’re waiting on medical reports to make that determination.”
