A woman rushed to the hospital Friday morning after fire crews rescued her from a burning DeKalb County condominium has died.
The woman, who was not identified, was in critical condition when she was loaded onto an ambulance, DeKalb fire spokesman Capt. Dion Bentley told AJC.com. She died at a hospital soon after.
Bentley said fire crews had hoped she would pull through.
“We did our best to try to get to her quickly,” he said.
Crews arriving at the condo in the 900 block of Park Gate Place outside the city of Stone Mountain found only moderate smoke, but a neighbor told them someone was trapped inside.
“A neighbor stated that there’s an elderly person that lives there, so we immediately went into rescue mode,” Bentley said.
One crew went to work fighting the fire, and a second searched the home for the woman. She was found in a bedroom nearest the heaviest smoke and flames.
“Once we pulled the victim out, we did start CPR, and the patient was transported with critical injuries,” he said.
The fire was quickly under control. While there is not much damage to the residence, Bentley said the woman got the worst of it because she “was in the wrong place where the fire was at.”
Investigators are on scene working to learn the cause of the fire.
