Early Monday morning, the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of a South Georgia man who drowned after a kayaking accident.

Albany resident Mark Lund, 38, was kayaking on Lake Blackshear on Saturday afternoon when his kayak overturned. Bystanders noticed Lund’s struggles and tried to offer assistance along with quickly calling 911, but they were unsuccessful.

A large search started that afternoon, working well into the night and beginning again Sunday morning. Multiple agencies collaborated in the search, including dive teams, EMS, Crisp County police officers and fire rescue, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Georgia State Patrol Aviation.

Lund was found at 8:42 a.m. Monday when his body was spotted 100 yards from where the search began. According to the sheriff’s office, state and local agencies spent more than 1,000 hours in search and recovery efforts.

“I appreciate the teamwork and dedication from all personnel involved. I would also like to thank the residents that offered their homes, boats and assistance, they truly went above and beyond,” Crisp County Sheriff H.W. “Billy” Hancock said.
