Gray will dominate metro Atlanta skies this weekend and rain will hang around, bringing flash flood watches to several east Georgia counties, according to Channel 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz.
"Cloudy skies and isolated showers will continue this evening and overnight with some patchy fog developing by morning," said Nitz. "A flash flood watch is in effect until 6 am Sunday for east Georgia, for the possibility of isolated flooding should some localized thunderstorms develop." Counties where severe weather alerts were issued on Saturday include Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Floyd and 14 others.
Sunday will be mostly cloudy with showers and storms, and a rain chance of 60 percent, said Nitz. Highs will be around 84 Saturday and Sunday.
Then drier weather sets up for the work week, he said.
It will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of isolated late-day showers and storms from Monday through Wednesday, Nitz said. The high will hit 87 on Monday; 88 on Tuesday and 90 on Wednesday.
This time last year, Atlanta had received about half the rainfall we’ve seen in 2013, according to the National Weather Service’s Rainfall Scorecard. Atlanta received 37.03 inches in 2012 — roughly four inches shy of 2013’s total to date.
And the more than 41 inches of rain on record this year is on pace with the wettest year — 1948, when the area logged 42 inches of precipitation by this time.
Even Seattle, known for its rainy disposition, can find itself in some regards green with envy. Atlanta has more than doubled the Emerald City’s rainfall total this year — as of this week, Seattle annual precipitation count is 18.05 inches.
