Police arrested two suspects Friday in connection with a violent carjacking at a DeKalb County elementary school that left a construction worker seriously injured.

Cortez Butler, 20, and David Stamps, 18, are accused in Monday’s carjacking at Panola Way Elementary School and four other car break-ins. A third suspect has not been found, but police have identified him, Channel 2 Action News reported.

DeKalb schools police, DeKalb police and the U.S. Marshals Service worked together to arrest Butler and Stamps at a home in DeKalb County off Candler Road.

During the investigation, police connected Monday’s carjacking to several other incidents on DeKalb school properties, school officials said.

One woman, Sylvia Williams, told Channel 2 that the same three men broke into her car at a Columbia Drive day car center Monday and stole her granddaughter’s tablet and other items. Surveillance photos showed the same car police identified in connection with the carjacking.

“What happened to that construction worker could have happened to me, and thank God it did not happen,” Williams told Channel 2.

The men have been charged with carjacking, aggravated battery, having a weapon on school property and aggravated assault with a vehicle, according to the school district.

The construction worker’s Toyota Tundra was recovered at the scene of the arrest. The man, who was dragged alongside his vehicle after he tried to stop the carjackers, is still in the hospital with serious injuries, school officials said.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is paramount. Thanks to all the agencies that assisted DCSD Police in apprehending the suspects today,” school officials said in a statement Friday.
