Almost two weeks ago, a mutilated dog wandered into a CVS Pharmacy in Lilburn. Today that dog has a new name and a new home, thanks to the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia.

The 7-year-old mixed breed, now called Bruce, is one of the newest jail therapy dogs in Gwinnett County, said Virginia Keller, a spokesperson for the society. He was picked up from the Gwinnett animal shelter over the weekend.

"He is a splendid dog," Keller said. "He's good with kids and he was cuddling with his foster parents' Chihuahua and he is house trained."

Keller said Bruce has all the attributes of a well-cared for pet.

"Nobody can figure out what happened and where he came from," she said.

Bruce was found March 6, with a burn wound on his head and no ears. Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement officers responded to the CVS and took the dog to the Gwinnett County animal shelter.

The next day a dog was found shot and abandoned in a dumpster in Atlanta. That dog, later named Catie, was picked up by Fulton County Animal Services and taken to an animal hospital for emergency surgery. Catie was also taken in by the Society, but eventually had to be euthanized because its injuries were so extensive.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case of the each dog.

People with information about Catie can call Fulton County Animal Control at 404-613-0358 or Zone 1 Investigations at 404-658-6486.

Those with information about Bruce should call Animal Control Officer Joey Brooks at 770-339-3200.

People who wish to remain anonymous, and have information about either dog's injuries can call Crime Stoppers at 404-557-TIPS (8477) or visit www.crimestoppersatlanta.org.
