Four men suspected in a drive-by shooting in Clayton County were taken into custody after a manhunt in Fayetteville Tuesday afternoon.

The manhunt led authorities to warn Fayetteville residents to stay inside for several hours. Around 7:20 p.m., Fayetteville authorities announced that the suspects had been apprehended and the threat had passed.

The incident began in Clayton where four armed men in a car were suspected in a drive-by shooting that took place just after 4:15 p.m., City of Fayetteville spokeswoman Anne Marie Burdett said in a news release.

A description of the car was shared with other Clayton officers and neighboring metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies, Burdett said. Clayton police first recognized the car and a pursuit ensued, leading officers into Fayette County and ultimately to Fayetteville, where the four men left the car near Susan Lane.

There was a heavy police presence in the area of Lake Drive and South Jeff Davis Drive during the search, and residents in the neighborhood were urged to stay inside, Burdett said.

“Residents are advised to stay in their houses and call 911 immediately if you should happen to see anything suspicious,” Fayetteville police said during the search.

One man was tracked and found by a Fayetteville police K-9 officer around 5 p.m., while the other three men were apprehended in a car trying to leave the area. All four suspects were taken into custody in Fayetteville and have pending criminal charges out of Clayton, Burdett said.

Clayton police said the investigation is ongoing and that more details would be released about the original incident that led to the chase.
