No charges are expected in a shooting that left one person dead and another injured Monday afternoon at a home near two schools in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, police said.

Shots were fired around 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Howell Street after a man “entered the home through a window,” Atlanta police said in a news release. The man confronted the homeowner and attacked him before the homeowner shot the man, police added. The man died from his injuries.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the intruder as 57-year-old Michael Edwards.

Police did not say how the homeowner was injured but he remained on scene and was “cooperative” with officers. He was taken to the hospital and was stable.

The scene was across the street from David T. Howard Middle School and near Hope-Hill Elementary School.
