A 12-year-old Bartow County boy was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

The boy, whose name was not released, had gotten off his school bus and was checking his family’s mailbox on Euharlee Road, Euharlee police Chief Terry Harget told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. When he turned around to cross the street, the boy was struck by a vehicle near the town’s Dollar General store, Harget said.

He said that witnesses told investigators that the boy “darted out” into the roadway in front of the vehicle.

The boy was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he was in very critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery late Wednesday, Harget said.

Harget said the driver that struck the boy stopped, rendered aid and called 911.

“She was very distraught, and very cooperative,” Harget said. He said Thursday that no charges had been filed, but that the incident remained under investigation.”
