Outdoor activities have been suspended at a Clayton County elementary school after a student was shot with a BB gun Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.
The boy was playing during Callaway Elementary School’s field day when he was hit in the head by a BB gun projectile, AM 750 and 95.5 FM WSB News/Talk Radio is reporting.
He was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury, authorities said.
Clayton County Schools spokeswoman Vicki Gavalas told the radio station that the shot was fired from somewhere off campus.
“There was a shot fired from the community beyond the tree line from the school,” Gavalas said. “We don’t know who fired the shot, why the shot was fired, was it a stray shot.”
School authorities said all outdoor events at the Jonesboro school, including any further field day events, will be canceled for the remainder of the school year.
Police are investigating.
