Background: FBI agent's son accused of killing two students

The suspect's father is FBI agent John Cook, said Monroe County Sheriff J.C. Bittick. "His father knows about the arrest and he has been as cooperative as he can be, " Bittick said.

An FBI official in Atlanta said Cook is not allowed to comment on the case.

The two students, who had been dating about six months, were gunned down in area at the lake known as lover's lane. An assailant fired a barrage of shots into Cartagena's new Honda, then walked to the car and fired several more rounds, a witness told police.

"We are still working on a motive, " said Bittick. "So far, we have found no connection between Cook and the students. Nothing we have found points to robbery. We are still looking to see if others were involved."

Bittick said Cook was developed as a suspect around Thanksgiving. He would not elaborate.

However, police believe that they have the weapons used in the slaying. Two guns have been sent to the GBI crime lab for testing.

Word of Cook's arrest was circulated on fliers at the 7,000-student Mercer campus in Macon.

"Until the investigation is completed, we really can't say anything, but this is certainly good news, " said Matt Spaulding, director of news services at the school.

Cook was arrested Thursday morning on unrelated charges while he was hunting in south Jones County.

"Someone called in a report that he was skinning a deer and we went out there, " said Brad Walker, chief jailer for the Jones County Sheriff Department. "The game warden wrote tickets for all that and we locked him up."

Cook was charged with three counts of illegal possession of wildlife, one count of giving false information, two counts of hunting without a license and one count of hunting under the influence of marijuana.

Later, on Thursday night, he was charged in the murders.
