An Atlanta police officer has been arrested and charged with DUI for the second time in two years.

Officer Christopher Niezurawski was off-duty when he was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol over the weekend, Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee said. The incident happened on Piedmont Road at Lenox Road, the GSP said.

In November 2012, Niezurawski pleaded guilty to charges that he had been drinking when he drove the wrong way on I-85 and struck a Greyhound bus nearly head on that April. He was off-duty.

Niezurawski was sentenced to 12 months, 10 days of which he had to serve in jail.

If an Atlanta officer is arrested for DUI, on- or off-duty, they are subjected to a minimum of a 16-day suspension or a maximum of dismissal of duties, Chafee said.

“In 2012, Chief (George) Turner increased the penalties for DUI convictions to make it clear he will not tolerate this conduct by APD employees,” Chafee said.

Niezurawski has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending a disciplinary hearing before Turner.
