An Acworth man faces a reckless driving charge after losing control of his vehicle on a Virginia interstate Sunday morning and slamming into a van carrying 80 rescue dogs, according to media reports.

The wreck occurred about 1:20 a.m. along I-81 in Roanoke County, local news station WFXR-TV reported.

Police told the station 32-year-old Pranav Yogesh Desai was driving in the left lane when he lost control of his 2015 Honda Odyssey and struck a Ram utility van carrying the animals. The crash sent both vehicles off the left side of the road and into the median, where the van overturned.

The driver of the van, identified as 31-year-old Leslie Ysuhuaylas of Plano, Texas, was taken to an area hospital with injuries.

Authorities said she was hauling 50 crates of stray dogs from Texas to a no-kill animal shelter in Pennsylvania. One of the dogs was killed in the crash and several others were injured, WFXR reported. Another dog went missing after the door to its cage broke off in the crash, but it was eventually located.
