Used car shoppers in Gwinnett can feel a bit safer from con artists, police say. Jeffery Wayne Manders has turned himself in — to Hall County authorities.

Manders apparently didn’t want to return to any of the home jurisdictions that actually had a warrant out on him: Gwinnett and DeKalb counties and federal marshals. Gwinnett Police say the 44-year-old man turned himself in last week and now will rotate among courthouses.

“He will go from jurisdiction to jurisdiction to jurisdiction answering to the charges in each,” said Cpl. Ed Ritter of Gwinnett police. Detectives interviewed Manders by phone, Ritter said.

Manders popped into notoriety nearly two weeks ago when Gwinnett police announced they had an arrest warrant that charged him with scamming shoppers on Craigslist by advertising cars for sale that were owned by a car dealership.

Manders would meet potential buyers at the lot, take a cash down payment on the vehicle — ranging from $800 to $1,800, and provide a fake bill of sale, police said. When the buyer returned with the rest of the cash to pick up the vehicle, Manders was nowhere to be found, police said.

Honda Mall of Georgia notified police after a few bewildered and angry car buyers told them they had been flimflammed, police said.

Manders also has an active forgery warrant through DeKalb County as well as a probation violation warrant issued by the U.S. Marshall’s Service, according to police.
