Atlanta’s weekend forecast is looking drier than expected, good news for college football fans headed to Saturday’s SEC championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It’s still going to be cold, though.

“If you’re doing any tailgating for the SEC championship, pack the heavier coat,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Ashley Kramlich said.

Much like Friday, temperatures will struggle to get out of the 40-degree range throughout Saturday afternoon, she said. Lows are expected to dip into the 30s on Saturday night.

So bundle up in layers if you’re attending the 4 p.m. Georgia vs. Alabama game. The stadium is climate-controlled, but you’ll want some insulation during outdoor pregame festivities and the walk back to the train or car.

The cool trend is expected to stay with us through Sunday and at least the first half of next week. Beyond that, projected highs climb back into the mid to upper 50s.

South of the city, it’s still going to be a bit soggy over the weekend.

Rain moving in from the Gulf Coast will trail over the metro area both Friday and Saturday, but the bulk of it should fall south of I-20. Less than an inch is now expected between Atlanta and Macon, instead of the up to 3 inches initially predicted by the National Weather Service over a several-day stretch. And areas south of Macon could see up to 1.3 inches of rainfall.

A few scattered showers could still be around Sunday, but those should stay over Middle Georgia.
