Two people were killed in separate head-on collisions that caused heavy delays on I-285 East through Doraville early Thursday.

The first crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on the Exit 32 ramp to Buford Highway, according to Doraville police. A wrong-way driver entered the interstate there and crashed into another vehicle that was exiting.

After that crash, the wrong-way driver continued onto the interstate, where a second head-on collision occurred, police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Two people in that vehicle were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where one of them died, officials confirmed.

A person in the vehicle traveling the wrong way also died at the scene. According to DeKalb County Fire and Rescue, that person was trapped in the car as it was engulfed in flames.

Officials have not released the names of the two who died or said if they expect to file any charges.

While investigators were on the scene, one lane of traffic was getting by, but the blockage still led to delays stretching back nearly to Ashford Dunwoody Road as morning commuters funneled onto their routes. Lanes reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m.
