A child died Friday after being pulled out of a pool at a Decatur recreation center, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the Oakhurst Recreation Center on East Lake Drive around 4 p.m. regarding an unresponsive child.

Staff were performing CPR on the girl by the time fire crews arrived, said Remy Epps, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The child, who was identified by the county’s medical examiner’s office as 2½-year-old Poppy Pepper of Dacula, was taken to a hospital and died.

The center was closed through the weekend and reopened Monday, with the exception of the indoor pool, according to the city’s website.

“Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones and all those impacted during this difficult time,” Epps said. “Out of respect for the investigation and those impacted, Oakhurst Recreation Center and Pool will remain closed until further notice.”

Authorities said the death is being investigated, but no other details were provided.
