A 20-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car while walking near the University of Georgia’s campus early Saturday.

According to police, the driver who hit Ariana Zarse in downtown Athens did not remain at the scene of the crash. Investigators have located the car involved in the fatal incident, but have not determined who was driving it, officials said.

Zarse and a friend were trying to cross Broad Street near Foundry Street about 12:15 a.m., Athens-Clarke County police said in a statement. As they walked across the road, a Honda Accord that was traveling west on Broad Street struck Zarse.

Zarse was taken to a hospital, where she died. Her friend was not hit by the car.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the crashed is asked to contact Officer Dustin Tilley at 762-400-7355 or by email at dustin.tilley@accgov.com.
