Two people were killed and at least three others were critically wounded in a stabbing at a California church Sunday night, according to news reports.

No services were being conducted at the time of the attack at Grace Baptist Church in San Jose, but homeless people may have been there seeking shelter from the cold weather, reports said.

The surviving victims reportedly have life-threatening injuries.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo confirmed that two had died.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the two community members who have succumbed to stabbing wounds in the attack at Grace Baptist Church downtown tonight,” he tweeted.

Police have released few details and would not confirm whether a suspect had been arrested. There were earlier conflicting news reports that a 22-year-old man was in custody.

Liccardo also initially tweeted that police had the suspect in custody but later deleted the statement, saying police would later provide an update on the investigation.

The church is at South 10th and East San Fernando streets, which is across the street from the campus of San Jose State University.

Officers first responded to the scene about 8:47 p.m., according to a tweet by San Jose police.

Officials updated the public on the case via social media late into the night.

There were two crime scenes: inside and outside the building.

Police have not revealed a motive for the attack.

An investigation is continuing.
