Carroll County deputies have charged two people in the fatal shooting of an 83-year-old woman who was found dead inside her home over Mother’s Day weekend.

The body of Barbara Gibson was discovered May 9 in the 1900 block of Burwell-Mt. Zion Road, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said previously. Investigators believe she was shot and killed sometime between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Authorities said a traffic stop conducted Tuesday afternoon led to the arrests of a man and woman believed to be responsible for her death. The suspects, whose names have not been released, are both charged with murder, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Ashley Hulsey told AJC.com.

Investigators have not revealed a motive in the case, but more information will be released during a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the sheriff’s office, she said.

The man and woman charged with Gibson’s murder both live in the same home, Hulsey said, but their relationship is unclear. Deputies did not say if they knew the 83-year-old.

Both suspects are being booked into the Carroll County Jail, investigators said.
