Atlanta Public Schools’ four-year graduation rate reached 83.1% for the class of 2021.

That’s an increase from the year before, when it was 80.3%.

“Despite a global pandemic, uncertainty, and racial unrest, these resilient scholars persevered and accomplished an important milestone,” said Superintendent Lisa Herring, in a written statement. “Their success in achieving APS’ all time high graduation rate is a testament to the focus and concerted efforts of our students, teachers, counselors, families and school leaders.”

Georgia began using a federally mandated formula to calculate the rate in 2012. This year’s rates were released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Education.

The statewide high school graduation rate remained nearly flat for the class of 2021 at 83.7% during a year in which many students experienced disruptions because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

APS officials held a news conference Thursday at Booker T. Washington High School to note the district’s rate. That school saw a 7 percentage point increase this year, up to 80.5%.
