Georgia’s high school graduation rate ticks up, reaching high of 88.5%

Georgia’s high school graduation rate continues to trend upward, hitting an all-time high of 88.5% according to data released on Monday.

The rate, which measures the percentage of students who graduated in four years, improved slightly from the year before, when 87.2% of seniors graduated.

State education officials credited the increase in part to programs like Career, Technical and Agricultural Education to increased investments in the fine arts. They also noted pathway programs like the Accelerated Career Diploma and Work-Based Learning Diploma for helping students prepare for skilled careers.

“It’s important to us that we’re not just increasing the graduation rate, but ensuring students graduate prepared for life. Together with schools, districts, and partners across the state, we’re ensuring that the high school diploma in Georgia is a ticket to a successful future,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said in a written statement.

Angira Sceusi, the executive director of the education nonprofit RedefinED Atlanta, said while important, graduation rates alone don’t give a full picture of well a school or district is doing.

“Graduation rates tell us whether students are earning diplomas; they don’t tell us on their own whether students have mastered the knowledge and skills they need for what comes next,” she said. “We should celebrate rising graduation rates while also looking at proficiency, growth, and college-and-career readiness to understand whether students are truly succeeding.”

Several metro Atlanta school districts have seen their graduation rates improve in recent years, reaching all-time highs in 2026. Forsyth County Schools outpaced most others, posting a rate of 97.5%. Districts that topped 90% include Atlanta Public Schools (91.2%), Cobb County schools (90.9%), City Schools of Decatur (96.7%) Fulton County Schools (93.4%), Henry County schools (92.3%) and Marietta City Schools (95.1%).

Still, Sceusi said drawing comparisons between school systems can be like comparing apples and oranges because no two are exactly alike.

“(School districts) serve different numbers of students, have different levels of resources and face different challenges,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look across districts, using graduation and other data like Georgia Milestones data, to ask what we can learn to solve persistent challenges where gaps persist or in understanding what may be contributing to better outcomes.”
