Wal-Mart opened a sprawling new distribution center on Thursday that will bring nearly 400 jobs to south Fulton County.

The world’s largest retailer will use the 1.2 million square foot facility in Union City to fill online orders for its all-important e-commerce business. It’s the third large-scale distribution center the company has opened in the last three months.

It is part of network of distribution hubs that ships packages to the 4,500 or so Wal-Mart stores. Michael Bender, the company’s Chief Operating Officer for e-commerce, called it the “crown jewel” of the system.

“There’s nothing else like this one elsewhere,” he said.

The company already has seven distribution centers in Georgia and employs about 57,000 people in the state.
