Delta Air Lines said it plans to begin flights from Detroit to Sao Paulo, Brazil, pending federal approval.

Atlanta-based Delta wants to fly twice a week from Detroit to Sao Paulo starting Nov. 4, and has applied for authorization from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin the route. Delta already flies to Sao Paulo from Atlanta and New York.

"Detroit continues to grow in its strategic importance to Delta's route network as a major connecting point between Asia and hundreds of U.S. and international destinations," Delta's senior vice president of government affairs Andrea Fischer Newman  said in a written statement.

Delta last year announced it would begin flights from Detroit to  Shanghai and Seoul, after discontinuing the routes from Atlanta. The airline also plans to begin flying from Detroit to Hong Kong and Tokyo-Haneda.
