Metro Atlanta has seen some of the steepest declines in construction jobs in the country since peaking five years ago, a new study shows.

The region has lost 56,100 construction jobs – a 40-percent drop since December 2006, according to a survey released Friday by industry group Associated General Contractors of America. Only five other metro areas, including Phoenix and Las Vegas, have lost more jobs since their construction employment peaks.

Today, Atlanta has 83,600 construction workers down from a high of 139,700, the group reported.

Nationwide, 329 out of 337 metro areas studied remain below peak construction employment levels. Only six have surpassed their peaks, including Bismarck, N.D.
