A Cherokee County principal is free on bond and on paid leave following his arrest for allegedly driving drunk and trying to elude police.

Holly Springs police arrested John Hultquist and charged him with DUI, attempting to elude and weaving Friday night, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Hultquist, 53, is principal of Clayton Elementary School in Canton. He was released from the Cherokee County jail Saturday after posting $3,000 bond, according to the sheriff's office.

Hultquist has taken a voluntary paid leave of absence from his job and an interim principal, Leticia Cline, has been assigned to the school, the Cherokee school system said. Parents were notified in a letter from Superintendent Frank Petruzielo.

Cline is a retired former assistant superintendent and principal with the school district, Petruzielo said.

"She is a longtime educator who lives in the Clayton community and cares deeply about the community and its children," Petruzielo wrote.
