The first round of the GHSA Basketball Tournament for girls was scheduled for tonight but many postponements are expected because of the weather. Some school systems do not let their schools play on days the school is closed because of inclement weather.

Already this morning schools are making schedule changes as McEachern athletics director Jimmy McEachern informed us that his girls’ team will host Douglas County Wednesday night at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game against Westlake.

DeKalb County has announced their playoffs games tonight will go on as scheduled.

The GHSA released the following statement:

Attention basketball coaches: because of threat of inclement weather this week, the GHSA is issuing the following notice concerning first-round state basketball playoff games:

If you can do so safely, please play first-round games in classes AA through AAAAAA as scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 17 and 18.

However, if weather is a problem in your area, the GHSA is giving permission to move any Tuesday girl’s games to Wednesday. Those games can then be played as part of a doubleheader, if all the participating teams agree. OR you can move the girls games to Wednesday and move the scheduled boys games from Wednesday to Thursday. But IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, all first-round games in AA through AAAAAA MUST be completed by Thursday night because we expect the next round to be played as scheduled on Friday (Feb. 20) and Saturday (Feb. 21).

Please notify the GHSA office of any changes made to the original schedule. And remember that TWO rounds of games in Classes AA through AAAAAA (and the first round of Class A) MUST BE FINISHED BY SATURDAY NIGHT, FEB. 21st!
