State tournament brackets will be finalized on Wednesday, to give schools time to make any appeals in reference to their position in the GHSA/MaxPreps Power Ratings, which were released this morning (see below).
The list below DOES NOT reflect the fact that region tournament champions must be seeded in the top eight when the state playoff brackets are announced. The brackets will be made final after any appeals of the power ratings are made today. The state playoffs are scheduled to begin Friday and Saturday.
Over the weekend, the region tournaments featured sweeps in six of the state’s eight regions. In regions 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, one school took home both the girls and boys titles. Here’s a look at the results with each team’s rank in last week’s power rating in parenthesis. The Randolph-Clay, Marion County and Hebron Christian boys, and the Mitchell County and Fellowship Christian girls, all appear to have improved their power ratings with strong runs in their respective region tournaments.
Unfortunately for the Montgomery County boys, it looks as if they may have fallen just short of making an improbable run to the state tournament, after going into the Region 3 tournament No. 22 in the power ratings. The Eagles advanced to the title game, but only improved their power rating to No. 17, .04 of a point shy of the No. 16 spot. Look for an appeal today from Montgomery County, asking for a recount of the points.
Additionally, the No. 1 schools in the last week's boys power rating – (Private) North Cobb Christian, (Public) Wilkinson County – lost in their respective title games. Conversely, both No. 1s on the girls side – (Private) St. Francis and (Public) Turner County – won championships.
