Sixth-ranked Pebblebrook isn’t the highest-ranked team in Region 3-AAAAAA. That would be No. 4 Westlake, which beat Pebblebrook in January.
But it's Pebblebrook (16-7, 11-1) that controls its region destiny. The Falcons travel to Westlake (16-4, 9-2) on Tuesday, then play at home against 10th-ranked Campbell (16-5, 7-4) on Saturday in the final week of the regular season.
Campbell is hot, having won five straight, including an 81-80 win over Westlake last week. Mike Olmert scored 25 points while Laz Walker had 24 with six 3-pointers.
The first Campbell-Pebblebrook game, played on Dec. 1, was epic. Pebblebrook won 104-101 in overtime and got 39 points from Collin Sexton and 31 from Jared Harper. Campbell’s Walker scored 37. Tyree Crankfield scored 27.
Walker, Crankfield and Olmert are guards who are about 6 feet or less, as are Pebblebrook’s Sexton (28.7 points per game) and Harper (27.1).
Westlake is the Goliath with five starters who range from 6-4 to 6-10, all Division I prospects.
Some girls games to watch this week ...
-Third-ranked South Forsyth’s girls team (19-4, 16-0 in 6-AAAAAA) will travel to No. 9 West Forsyth (18-5, 15-1) on Tuesday looking for a season sweep after beating the Wolverines 65-62 on Jan. 18. West Forsyth’s Jenna Staiti and South Forsyth’s Sarah Myers, both signed with Maryland, have led their teams in scoring since they were freshman. South is 5-3 against West in that time.
-Woodstock’s girls (14-0 in 5-AAAAAA) will try to lock up sole possession of first place Tuesday when they host county rival Cherokee (13-1). Woodstock won the first meeting 52-39 on Jan. 2. Cherokee has won seven straight since losing to Woodstock 52-39 on Jan. 2. Both are 19-3, but unranked, from a county that sent all six of its girls teams to the state playoffs last season and probably will again.
-One other AAAAAA girls team can clinch first place in the regular season by beating its closest rival this week. That’s sixth-ranked McEachern (16-7, 12-0 in Region 4), which travels to No. 7 Harrison (18-3, 11-1) on Friday. McEachern beat the Hoyas 74-65 at home on Jan. 12. McEachern has won 10 straight and hasn’t lost to a Georgia team since its opener (Southwest DeKalb).
