The state’s only two undefeated Class AAA teams are eager to get started in their quest for a championship. No. 1 Dawson County and No. 2 South Atlanta both open play in their respective region tournaments with a 25-0 record on the line.

South Atlanta makes its playoff debut on Thursday night at 7 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Therrell and Towers.

South Atlanta coach Akisha Graham said, “It feels great to finish the season undefeated. But the girls are still working hard and they’re excited about making history as the best team ever at South Atlanta.”

Graham said her team’s defense has been strong and continues to be a point of emphasis during pre-tournament practice.

Dawson County won’t play until Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Region 7-AAA semifinals at Franklin County. By winning the regular-season region championship, the Tigers earned a bye to the semifinals, giving them an automatic spot in the state tournament.

“We wanted to keep winning and stay on top,” Dawson County coach Steve Sweat said. “When you get to this stage you’ve got to be ready to play every night. I know everybody says it, but it’s true. When you get to the state playoffs every team is good and you can’t afford to have an off night.”

Dawson broke a school record with its 25th straight win last week in the regular-season finale against West Hall.
