The region tournaments are done in Class AAAAAAA, and below are unofficial first-round matchups for the state tournament, which begins Friday.
In the boys' bracket, defending champion Westlake is seeded to face third-ranked Newton in the second round. Playing in rugged Region 2, Westlake won the regular-seasons title, which included two impressive wins over Pebblebrook, but lost Saturday night in overtime to Pebblebrook, which got the No. 1 seed.
But Pebblebrook has no pleasure cruise ahead, either. The Falcons could face another top-five team, Norcross, in the quarterfinals.
The girls’ draw appears to be more balanced. No. 1 Norcross (top-10 national ranking) and No. 2 McEachern (three-time defending champion) are heavily favored and are in opposite halves.
The official draw, which the GHSA could set Monday, will include the awarding of wild cards, or at-large playoff bids, to one boys and one girls team. The wild card team will be the chosen based on the GHSA points power rating.
