Ten defending champions are alive as the state tennis tournament reaches its conclusion. The semifinalists have been determined for the state tennis tournament. The winners meet on May 6 in the state title matches at the Clayton County International Park in Jonesboro.
The semifinal matches are:
Class AAAAAAA: Boys – Lambert vs. Norcross, Milton vs. Etowah; Girls – Walton vs. Duluth/Brookwood, North Gwinnett vs. Etowah. Walton girls won Class AAAAAA last year.
Class AAAAAA: Boys – Creekview/Pope vs Northview, Johns Creek vs. Chattahoochee; Girls – Northview vs. Alpharetta, Chattahoochee vs. Cambridge. Northview boys are defending champions.
Class AAAAA: Boys – Lithia Springs/Newnan vs. Statesboro/Carrollton, Starr’s Mill vs. Buford; Girls – Union Grove/Chamblee vs. Kell, Starr’s Mill vs. Carrollton.
Class AAAA: Boys – LaGrange vs. Jefferson/Marist; Cartersville vs. North Oconee; Girls – Woodward Academy vs. St. Pius, Central Carroll vs. North Oconee. Marist boys and North Oconee girls are defending champions.
Class AAA: Boys – Westminster vs. Greater Atlanta Christian, Pace Academy vs. Lovett; Girls – Westminster vs. North Hall, Calhoun vs. Lovett. Westminster boys are defending champions. Lovett boys won AA last year.
Class AA: Boys – Harlem vs. Model, Banks County/Thomasville vs. Screven County/Bleckley County; Girls – Screven County vs. Jeff Davis/Rockmart, Bleckley County vs. Berrien.
Class A Public: Boys – Irwin County/Taylor County vs. Charlton County/Drew Charter, Telfair beat Trion 3-0 in other semifinal; Girls – Trion vs. Taylor County/Irwin County; Telfair County/Miller County vs. Clinch County/Drew Charter. Telfair County boys and Irwin County girls are defending champions.
Class A Private: Boys – Atlanta International vs. Walker/Stratford, Mt. Paran vs. Paideia/Athens Mt. Paran/Brookstone vs. St. Francis/Galloway. Paideia boys and Brookstone girls are defending champions.
Kalusche top individual, Calhoun top team at Lady Trojan
Sophia Kalusche of Darlington shot a 73 to win the Lady Trojan Invitational at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton.
Hannah Jones of Blessed Trinity and Maddie Crump of Calhoun tied for second at 76. Mary Catherine McDaniel of Columbus and Teagan Fritts of Woodward Academy tied for fourth with 77s.
Calhoun won the team title with a 241, with Katie Mashburn shooting 82 and Katie Kauffman shooting 83. Woodward was second at 242, adding a 79 from Ayanna Habeel and an 86 from Susannah Coles.
