Westlake (10-2) got the big upset in Class AAAAAA this week with a 28-9 victory over No. 6 Peachtree Ridge, which was projected by the computer Maxwell Ratings to win by 25 points.
Westlake advanced to the final eight for the first time since 1999. Not even Cam Newton (class of 2007) could get Westlake this far. Let it be said that junior QB Malik Willis did. Congrats to coach Bryan Love, who in 2013 got the Westlake job after the Lions had gone 0-10.
Meanwhile, in the week’s most exciting AAAAAA game, No. 4 Archer drove for a winning touchdown in the final minute to defeat No. 7 McEachern 24-21. Archer moves on to face Gwinnett County rival Mill Creek (12-0) next week.
Region 6 champion South Forsyth (11-1) is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2001, when it was a AAA school, after a 42-35 victory over Tucker.
Collins Hill, a No. 3 seed from Region 7, beat Region 2 champion Newton 31-24. Collins Hill, Archer, Grayson and Mill Creek give Gwinnett four teams in the final eight. Note that Collins Hill is 7-5.
No. 1 Colquitt County, No. 2 Grayson, No. 3 Roswell and No. 5 Mill Creek all won easily Friday.
Here are the quarterfinal matchups:
Collins Hill (7-5) at Roswell (12-0)
Grayson (12-0) at Westlake (10-2)*
Colquitt County (12-0) at South Forsyth (11-1)*
Archer (11-1) at Mill Creek (12-0)
*Won coin tosses to be the home team.
No. 1 Colquitt, No. 2 Grayson and No. 3 Roswell will be heavily favored, probably 20+ points by Maxwell. Archer-Mill Creek will be the marquee game.
