Much is made of Greenforest’s inside dominance. But on Thursday it was the outside shooting prowess of Justin Forrest that put the Eagles on the path to victory.
Forrest, a junior guard, scored 26 points and led the Eagles to a 78-48 win over Tattnall Square in the quarterfinals of the Class A Private tournament at Kennesaw State.
Greenforest will play the winner of the North Cobb Christian-Stratford Academy game in the semifinals on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. at Kennesaw State.
Forest scored 17 points in the first half to stake Greenforest to a 40-17 halftime lead. He made five 3-pointers, including a pair during a 14-0 first-half run that put the game away early. Forest was shaken up on a fall in the third quarter and did not return.
Greenforest coach Larry Thompson said, “He can hurt you in a variety of ways. He can shoot the basketball, he can get to the basket. .. He’s got a high basketball IQ.”
No. 1 seed Greenforest (28-2) extended its winning streak to 11 games. The Eagles’ last loss came to Class AAA No. 5 South Atlanta, a team playing in the quartertfinals.
The Eagles also got 14 points from Abayomi Iyiola and 13 from John Ogwuche, who also had three 3-pointers. Ikey Obiagu had eight blocked shots.
Tattnall (18-10) was led by Calvin Slaughter with 12 points and Jimmy Marshall with 11, all in the second half.
Tattnall coach Jarvis Smith said, “The first run was 3-point shooting. The second run was second chances, third chances around the glass. Both runs hurt us big-time, especially because we weren’t hitting shots.”
